Usually, after school, we have a tight schedule. The kids have a snack and get to work on music lessons/homework/practice/whatever else is going on that afternoon. But every once in a while (usually on Fridays), it’s good to be The Fun Mom. The Non-Nagging Mom. The Homework Skipping Hot Chocolate Embellishing Mom.
So we recently set up a hot chocolate bar, and we all went a little nuts.
As I set it up, I realized a lot of the hot chocolate toppings were similar to those in an ice cream sundae…and they were gooooood.
The nice thing about this is that you can raid your cupboards — set out whatever you have and don’t worry about the rest. We laid out whipped cream, marshmallows, spices like nutmeg and cinnamon, crushed chocolate cookies, peanut butter (try a scoop mixed in with your hot chocolate…trust me), and candy corn.
If we have candy lying around (like…oh…say, right after Halloween), we pulse it in a food processor until it’s in medium-sized chunks and add that, too. Around Christmas we add crushed candy canes. Whatever we’ve got goes in!
This would be a fun activity for a Halloween party, too. The parents can grab some hot chocolate or coffee in a Dixie® To Go cup, load up on some mix-ins, and head out with the kids for trick-or-treating. Or at Christmas, have a hot chocolate bar ready with Dixie® To Go cups and then pile into the car to go look at Christmas lights. So many possibilities.
We actually need Dixie® To Go cups all the time in the fall. We’re always out and about — pumpkin picking or hiking or just trying to get out and enjoy the last of the good weather. And the air has a little chill to it now. There’s no better feeling than heading outdoors with the kids and a piping hot cup of coffee.
I mean, seriously. Keeping up with them in hay mazes and pumpkin patches and leaf jumping…I need So. Much. Coffee. These Dixie® To Go cups have always been our first choice because they’ve got a leak-resistant lid and great insulation. We can grab ’em and head out the door. Hopefully to somewhere we can soak up these last, beautiful days that are autumn in Colorado.
And here are a few delicious fall drinks to put in your Dixie® To Go cups:
