Today’s idea for connecting with kids is courtesy of my friend Jodie. Jodie has four young children, like me, which means she finds the same delight in a solo trip to the grocery store and also has a purse full of toy cars/crayons/used tissues/things that have been pulled out of people’s noses. Though that last […]
Now that it’s getting colder out, I find us doing more bird watching. The birds get hungry, and if you’re one of the houses generously feeding them you become very popular with the birds. Here in Colorado, where most available water freezes, even putting out a birdbath with fresh water attracts lots of birds.
Ok, technically they’re riding bikes. But I was walking, so it counts.
Hiking trips begin at our house with me all, “Hey, kids! We’re going hiking! Come on! Get your stuff and load up!” and them all, “Unhhhhhh. Blahhhhh. Blurt. Bah. Do we have to? And also when will we be home?” I see it as my job — as a caring, sensitive, loving mother — to […]
Making dinner by myself would be so much faster. And often I do (when my husband isn’t making it. I’m not gonna pretend I do all the cooking around here.) But when I take the extra five minutes to include one of the kids, letting them measure and stir and crack eggs and make a […]
Bubbles, bubbles, bubbles! The kids had some bubble fun yesterday, in the backyard, on a whim. We didn’t have any special bubble blowers. We didn’t have any fancy bubble soap with glycerin and all that stuff you need for huge awesome bubbles. We had dish soap and kitchen utensils. They loved it.
I think I’m a traveler by nature. I’m a road-tripper, for certain — a lover of car excursions both long (like weeks) and short (we like driving 3-4 hours in a day to visit stuff around here). But sometimes? We just need to sit and stay put. I have to wash everyone’s underwear and read the […]
I’m getting ready to run this on Monday. People have called it the best 10k in the country, and I agree it’s pretty fun. But I’m totally not ready for it. I say this every time and somehow I always manage to finish but this time I mean it. The guy who always runs in a gorilla […]
My kids tell me they have 18 days of school left until they’re out for summer. I can’t wait, actually. I’m ready to sleep in…and to hit the road for some day trips…and to play in the dirt and stuff.
Last week, I shared our Nature Journals with you. Today, I wanted to give a few writing prompts, in case your children have trouble deciding what to write about in their new journals. There are so many things they can write about outside — the weather, their surroundings, the animals they see, how they’re feeling. They can really […]
