There’s a good chance my mom’s going to read this (hi, mom!) and laugh and laugh, because when she came to visit last week, she was horrified to see I’d murdered all my orchids.
However. Dead orchids notwithstanding, I really think one of the best ways to combat a dreary mid-winter is with some living, green things indoors.
I have a few leftover Christmas narcissus, which have stopped blooming but are still green. And I have a snake plant, which I got from Home Depot last year and is impossible to kill. Either that or I’ve already killed it and dead snake plants look the same as alive snake plants, which is just as good in my book.
And if you can possibly swing it, an occasional bunch of flowers is a great shot of living color. Our grocery store has a discount flower area in the back of the store that I check each time I go. Or, you can invite your mother to visit and when she’s finished bemoaning your orchids, she may buy you a bunch of roses.
I’m headed out this week to pick up some pansies to pot as well…and when the weather gets slightly warmer, I could transplant them outside. But I’ll probably keep them in here to brighten the house instead.
(Just a word of warning, however…indoor houseplants can get overrun by tiny garden gnomes, if you don’t take proper precautions.)
