The first time I tried this, I was kind of excited. It made the house smell so gooooood. So I poured myself a mug, settled in and…it was disgusting. Really bitter and gross. It took me four tries before I got it right, but now? Now it really is gooooood.
3 c apple juice
3 c wine (a fruity red — like a Pinot Noir)
1/2 c honey
1 orange, sliced with peel on
3 cinnamon sticks
1 1/2 Tb whole cloves
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1 tsp ground cinnamon
Mix wine, apple juice and honey in a saucepan on the stove. Add orange and spices, mix and let simmer for 20-30 min. Strain out the spices (again, you could bind them all up in cheesecloth but I’m not a person who has cheesecloth on-hand) and garnish with a cinnamon stick to serve.
You can also add everything to a slow-cooker or Crock-Pot and leave it on low for 2-3 hours. One more thing — I think since you’re adding so many spices and other flavors to it, you can go cheap on the wine itself.
