OK, I’m not actually going to tell you everything else about having a baby. Because as anyone who’s had one for more than a minute knows, none of us really has any clue what we’re doing. We have opinions and ideas and theories and then these munchkins come along and blow them all out the window and we’re forced to stare at them helplessly. And pray. And love them anyway. But here, in no particular order, are other bits of advice…from me.
~When you’re in the hospital, people are going to tell you to get plenty of sleep because “once you get home, this baby will keep you busy.” You’re probably not going to sleep. If you’re like me, not only will you not sleep, you’ll feel guilty about not sleeping because everyone else is telling you to and you just can’t. Relax. You’ll sleep again someday. In the meantime, do whatever you want.
~You will, however, feel like a new woman after a shower. I highly recommend a shower and clothes other than the hospital gown if you possibly can. Sweats are awesome.
~For that matter, shower regularly once you get home, too. Even if you’re hanging out in your sweats all day and not leaving the house. It just makes you feel human.
~Try to get out of the house. It’s easy to insulate yourself with this tiny human. Go for a walk with them. Go to Starbucks. It doesn’t have to be big. And yes, the first time you leave it will take you half an hour to get out the door with all your baby paraphernalia. It takes practice.
~Relax. Smile. You’re doing great. Maybe find someone to tell you this in person every once in a while.
