So last summer, I shared my recipe for 7 Layer Bars. And my son got cheeky and suggested that they were really 6 Layer Bars and we went back and forth and back and forth…and then we went on vacation and he did what children do when they aren’t getting what they want from Mom. He went to Grandma. Grandma, who’s been making 7 Layer Bars my whole life. And not only did Grandma back him up, she announced that I’d been making them all wrong. So. Although that first recipe is delicious, and well worth making, this is Grandma’s Definitive 7 Layer Bar Recipe to End All 7 Layer Bar Recipes. Amen.
Grandma would also like you to know that her recipe is better because it uses only one pan, instead of two. I’d just hand the blog over to her and have her do this, but she’s currently canoeing through the Adirondacks and can’t be reached. Hmph.
What remains true is that these are great for hikes and picnics and as a small treat after lunch, assuming your school allows small treats after lunch and doesn’t make you replace all the chocolate with kale.
It’s still best to allow the bars to cool, cut them, and then store in the fridge or freeze for later. If you don’t eat them all right away, I mean.
Ingredients
- 1/2 c butter
- 1 c graham cracker crumbs
- 2 c semisweet chocolate chips
- 2 c butterscotch chips
- 1 c shredded coconut
- 1/2 c chopped walnuts
- 1 (14 oz) can sweetened condensed milk
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350. In a 9x13" pan, melt butter in the oven. Remove and pour graham cracker crumbs over melted butter. Layer chips, coconut, and walnuts. Pour condensed milk over layers. Bake at 350 for 25-30 min. Cool and cut into bars.
This is one of those super-simple recipes that’s great to have in your repertoire for holiday potlucks and last minute events (or events that you knew were coming and then forgot and then remembered again at the last minute. You know, if you’re the sort of person who might do something like that. Hypothetically.)

Love the flavor but mine didn’t turn out where I could cut them. Any suggestions? Refrigerate them to chill?
Just wondering if you use sweetened or unsweetened shredded coconut?
I use unsweetened since there are other sweet ingredients in these bars!
