Before we leave on a road trip, I always take the kids to pick out some special snacks and a new (or new-to-them-thrift-store) book. Then I take them to help me pick out yarn. Because long days on the road, and long, lazy days at the beach when we get there mean lots of knitting for me (and new clothes for them!).
I let my three-year old pick out the yarn to make her sweater dress…which means we went with something purple (not pink? We must be branching out) and sparkly. She was beside herself.
This is the Fialka Dress, but I lengthened the sleeves to make it a little more winter-friendly. We used Cascade Yarn’s Sunseeker in Striking Purple — about 2 1/2 skeins for a 3-year old little girl. I almost always have trouble with sizing for my kids (the last sweater I knit my 11-year old said it was sized for a preschooler), but this time the pattern was right on. My ravelry notes are here, if you’d like to check them out and be my knitting friend.
We’re now on the hunt for a pair of sparkly tights to compliment the dress. And — could we be so lucky? — sparkly shoes as well. Though I think the pink boots have a certain panache.
The perfect dress for gardening…or goofing around in these last days before she — my baby — starts preschool. Goodness.
